History of Yamunotri

It is the source of the Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna in Hinduism. It is situated at an altitude of 3,293 metres (10,804 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas and located approximately 30 kilometers , North of Uttarkashi, the headquarters of the Uttarkashi district in the Garhwal Division of Uttarakhand,India. It is one of the four sites in India's Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage. The sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch Parvat. The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to the Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti (7 km. Away).
Yamunotri is where the second most holy of river of India, the River Yamuna, takes birth. Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri Dham is the first stop in the pilgrimage. It is believed that bathing in its water cleanses all sins and protects from untimely and painful death. The shrine of Yamunotri is believed to be built in 1839 by the king of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah. Besides the Yamuna Devi (goddess), the idol of Ganga Devi too is housed in the revered temple. There are many hot water springs near the temple; Surya Kund is the most important among them. Devotees boil rice in the kund and accept it as a Prasad of the devi.

LEGEND

Yamuna Goddess is believed to be Sun's daughter and twin sister of Yama (the god of death). It is said that sage Asit Muni lived here and bathed in both Ganga and Yamuna. In his old age, when he was unable to go to Gangotri, a stream of Ganga started to flow across the steam of Yamuna.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions for yatra planning, preparation, safety, booking, and refunds.

1. Is Char Dham yatra physically demanding? Who should avoid it?

Yes, it is physically demanding. The yatra involves trekking at high altitudes in cold weather. Yamunotri requires a 7 km trek and Kedarnath requires an 18 km trek. You can take horse, pony, or palki if needed, but even that can be tiring.

People who should be careful or avoid without medical clearance:

  • Those with heart problems or high blood pressure
  • People with breathing or lung issues
  • Anyone above 60 years with weak health
  • Pregnant women
  • People recovering from surgery or serious illness

If unsure, consult a doctor before booking.

2. How do we handle the yatra registration process for you?

Kindly fill the form in the contact section. Our team will contact you within 24 hours.

3. What is the best month to do each yatra?

All four dhams open in April/May and close in October/November every year.

  • May and June: Best overall time, pleasant weather, high spiritual energy, but crowded.
  • September and October: Also very good, clearer views and lower crowds after monsoon.
  • July and August: Avoid if possible due to monsoon landslides and road blockages.
4. What should I pack for the yatra?

Keep it light but practical:

  • Warm clothes (nights are very cold even in May at higher altitudes)
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Water bottle
  • Basic medicines: Diamox, paracetamol, antacid, band-aids
  • Torch or phone with good battery backup
  • Personal ID and documents
  • Dry snacks like nuts and biscuits
  • Small cash (ATMs are limited in hills)
5. Are there altitude sickness risks? How do you handle them?

Yes, altitude sickness is a real risk, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath (above 3,000 metres). Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and breathlessness.

How to handle it:

  • Climb slowly and do not rush
  • Drink enough water
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Rest after reaching each destination
  • Carry Diamox only after doctor advice
  • Use medical camps/first-aid points on yatra routes
  • Helicopter evacuation is possible in emergencies

If symptoms become severe, descend immediately.

6. How do I book a package with Khanduri Travels?

Kindly fill the form in the contact section. Our team will contact you within 24 hours.

7. Do you offer group packages and private packages both?

Yes, we offer both group packages and private packages.

8. What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Refund Policy:

  • 80% refund of total package cost if cancelled before 60 days of tour.
  • 70% refund of total package cost if cancelled before 45 days of tour.
  • 60% refund of total package cost if cancelled before 25 days of tour.
